Saying for Writers #122 - Stephen King

A Quote which Might (or Might Not) Inspire You to Write:

“When your story is ready for rewrite, cut it to the bone. Get rid of every ounce of excess fat. This is going to hurt; revising a story down to the bare essentials is always a little like murdering children, but it must be done.” — Stephen King

This deer has nothing to do with the King quotation, but I just wondered: did you notice the two little ones?

  1. The quote does assume you vastly overwrite as most writers do ( including Stephen King presumably). But some of us, like me, do not: I find that I need to enrich first drafts of my tales with description and interior feelings instead. Viva la difference!
